Premier League fixtures: TV schedule, live stream & guide to the opening weekend

The 2017-18 Premier League season gets under way on August 11 as a host of clubs vie for the top prize in English football.

Chelsea will attempt to defend their title from the challenge of teams such as Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool, and Manchester United, while Arsenal will be keen to at least ensure a return to the Champions League having missed out last term.

Man Utd to go unbeaten in the Premier League – 125/1

Some clubs will be preoccupied with concerns at the opposite end of the table as they attempt to avoid relegation to the Championship, while others will be determined to build on the progress they made last year.

Two teams will feature in the Premier League for the first time this coming season after Brighton and Huddersfield earned promotion, while Newcastle also return to the proverbial top table at the first attempt, having suffered relegation in 2015-16.

As the big kick-off draws closer, Goal has your complete guide to the opening weekend of fixtures

Arsenal and Leicester raised the curtain on the 2017-18 Premier League season at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night, with the Gunners emerging 4-3 winners in an enthralling affair.

It was the first time a Premier League opener had been played on a Friday and late goals from Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud to turn the match in the home side’s favour ensured it was a special occasion.

Six games will take place on Saturday, August 12, with Liverpool kicking off proceedings away to Watford in front of the television cameras at lunchtime. Four matches are scheduled for simultaneous 15:00 BST kick-offs, with Chelsea commencing their title defence at home to Burnley live on NBCSN in the US.

Chelsea don’t look like title contenders

Later on Saturday, newcomers Brighton will endure a baptism of fire as they play their first-ever Premier League game against Manchester City. That game will be shown live on BT Sport 1 in the UK.

There are two games on Sunday, August 13; Newcastle return to the top flight by hosting Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham and Manchester United take on West Ham at Old Trafford.

Both of those matches will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League in the UK and NBCSN in the US.

WHO ARE THE FAVOURITES?

Premier League fixtures: TV schedule, live stream & guide to the opening weekend

At odds of 13/8, Manchester City are favourites to win the 2017-18 Premier League, according to dabblebet.

Pep Guardiola’s side finished third in the division last season, 15 points behind winners Chelsea and eight points separating them from runners-up Tottenham. Guardiola has added a number of new players, including the likes of Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva, and has serious designs on replicating the success he achieved at Barcelona and Bayern Munich by succeeding in England.

Last year’s champions Chelsea are considered a 3/1 bet to retain their title, with Antonio Conte expected to find it more difficult in his second campaign at the helm of the Stamford Bridge club.

Klopp: €300m for Messi seems possible

Manchester United are priced at 15/4 to claim their first Premier League title since 2013, while the odds on last season’s runners-up Tottenham to win are 10/1. Arsenal, who endured their worst season in two decades last term by finishing fifth, are considered a better bet than their North London rivals at 9/1. Meanwhile, Liverpool are priced at 12/1 to win their first league title in 18 years.

Leicester, who won the 2015-16 Premier League, and Southampton are considered 250/1 bets to top the division this season, with Everton (80/1) deemed more likely to upset the usual suspects.

At the other end of the table, newly promoted Huddersfield are 8/13 favourites to be relegated, followed by their fellow newcomers Brighton at 5/4. Burnley narrowly avoided relegation last season, but the Clarets are priced at 5/4 to return to the Championship, with Watford (7/4) and Swansea (2/1) close behind. Championship winners Newcastle, meanwhile, are 7/2 bets to be relegated.

WHICH NEW PLAYERS WILL DEBUT?

Premier League fixtures: TV schedule, live stream & guide to the opening weekend

Most clubs have added new players from abroad during the summer transfer window and Premier League fans will have the chance to see a host of fresh imports in action in 2017-18.

Arsenal signed Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon in a €53 million deal, with Bosnia and Herzegovina international Sead Kolasinac joining from Bundesliga side Schalke.

Manchester United fans will already be familiar with Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku, but new signing Victor Lindelof is a new arrival to the Premier League from Benfica.

All the latest summer transfer rumours

Chelsea and Manchester City raided Ligue 1 champions Monaco during the summer, with Tiemoue Bakayoko joining the Blues, while Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy moved to the Etihad Stadium. Antonio Conte has also added talent from Serie A and La Liga, with Antonio Rudiger joining from Roma and Alvaro Morata moving from Real Madrid.

As well as Mendy and Silva, Pep Guardiola has brought players in from Portugal and Spain, with goalkeeper Ederson coming from Benfica and Danilo leaving Madrid to sign for the Citizens. On Merseyside, fans will have a chance to become reacquainted with Liverpool new boy Mohamed Salah, who returns to England from Roma, having previously played for Chelsea.

Also on Merseyside, a Europa League finalist and a former Barcelona forward will be strutting their stuff in England for the first time as Davy Klaassen and Sandro Ramirez line out for Everton.

Newcomers Brighton have turned to the Bundesliga and La Liga in an effort to make their squad Premier League-ready, with former Valencia goalkeeper Matthew Ryan joining the Seagulls, along with Pascal Gross and Markus Suttner, who arrive from Ingolstadt.

Chidi Okezie’s Gold Medal Inspiration: Egbunike Inspired Me To Win Gold

Chidi Okezie: Egbunike Inspired Me To Win Gold Medal | Fab.ng

In 1987, Nigerian athlete Innocent Egbunike stormed onto the international scene. At the All-African Games, he clocked a phenomenal 44.23 seconds in the 400 meters, setting a new Games record. This electrifying performance grabbed headlines worldwide and solidified his position as a track star.

However, Egbunike’s feat hasn’t been replicated in recent decades. Since his win, Nigerian runners haven’t managed to claim the top spot in the 400 meters at the All-African Games. The closest they’ve come is four silver medals—two by the late Sunday Bada (1991 and 1995), Clement Chukwu (1999), and Tobi Ogunmola (2011).

Nigerian athlete Chidi Okezie emerged victorious in the 400-meter race at the recent All-African Games, clocking an impressive 45.06 seconds. While most eyes were on the pre-race favorites, Muzala Samukonga and Tidiane Diouf, Okezie remained under the radar.

Despite the dominance of Samukonga and Diouf throughout most of the race, Okezie surged forward with a powerful kick in the final curve. This surge propelled him past his competitors and ultimately to victory. It was a performance that not only secured him the win but also a season and personal best time.

For over three decades, Innocent Egbunike’s 1987 All-African Games record of 44.23 seconds loomed large. Since then, Nigerian runners have only managed silver medals. Okezie, however, has emerged as a serious contender, inspired by the legendary Egbunike.

“Egbunike is a role model for me,” declared Chidi Okezie. He expressed his desire to break Egbunike’s record. Even on race day, Egbunike’s motivational words fueled Okezie’s performance.

This victory marks a significant step for Nigerian athletics. Chidi Okezie’s determination and inspiration from Egbunike are a powerful combination. With his sights set on surpassing the long-standing record, Chidi Okezie’s future in sprinting appears bright. The wait for another Nigerian gold medalist in the 400m at the All-African Games may finally be over.

The 13th edition of the African Games concluded today, marking the end of a thrilling competition that saw Africa’s top athletes battle it out across three Ghanaian cities: Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast. Notably, 53 out of 54 African nations participated, showcasing a remarkable display of unity and sporting spirit. Only Cape Verde was absent from this prestigious event.

Originally planned for August 2023, the African Games faced a delay due to unfinished facilities and marketing hurdles. Despite the setback, Ghana, the host nation, rose to the challenge and delivered a remarkable championship in March 2024.

This spectacular event celebrated Africa’s vibrant culture, incredible athletic talent, and rich diversity. The ceremony captivated audiences with stunning displays of color, intricate choreography, and powerful symbolism. Tobi Amusan Bags 100m Hurdles In African Games | Fab.ng

Nigerian track and field superstar Tobi Amusan dominated the first round of the women’s 100-meter hurdles race at the 13th African Games in Ghana. She blazed through the competition, leaving her opponents in the dust. Clocking in at an impressive 13.03 seconds, Amusan secured a spot in the semifinals with ease. This win adds to her already impressive winning streak this year, following her victory in the 60-meter hurdles just two months ago in France.

Nigerian runners fought hard but didn’t quite clinch gold at the African Games on Tuesday! In the men’s 100-meter dash, Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme stole the show, crossing the finish line first with a time of 10.14 seconds. Usheoritse Itsekiri of Nigeria gave it his all but came in second at 10.23 seconds. Namibia’s Hainuca Gilbert also put in a strong performance, snagging the bronze medal with a time of 10.25 seconds.

The story was similar in the women’s race. Gambia’s Miriam Bittaye dominated the track, securing the gold medal in 11.36 seconds. Nigerian sprinter Olayinka Olajide delivered a powerful run, earning the bronze medal with a time of 11.55 seconds. Liberia’s Alyse Miccoy wasn’t far behind, grabbing the silver medal at 11.49 seconds.

Owing to her victory at the African Games in Ghana, experts predict Tobi Amusan will continue to shine throughout the rest of the competition, potentially claiming the gold medal for Nigeria.

Even though Nigeria didn’t win gold this time, their athletes showed incredible speed and determination on the track. It was a close race, and they should be proud of their podium finishes.
