Man Utd 2-1 Anderlecht (Agg 3-2): Marcus Rashford is the MVP!

Published

on

Manchester United overcame injuries to Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to beat Anderlecht in extra time, courtesy of Marcus Rashford.

Marcus Rashford was Manchester United’s hero with a dramatic extra-time winner that sealed a 3-2 aggregate victory over Anderlecht in the Europa League quarter-finals.

The 19-year-old followed up his starring role in the Premier League win over Chelsea with a well-taken strike early in the second period of extra time to give United a 2-1 win on the night at Old Trafford and a place in the last four.

An entertaining match had seen Henrikh Mkhitaryan follow up his goal in the first leg by netting his fifth goal of the competition after 10 minutes, only for Anderlecht captain Sofiane Hanni to hit back before the break.

United dominated in the second half, but Jesse Lingard, Rashford, Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all squandered chances to score as the tie moved into extra time.

Victory came at a cost for Jose Mourinho, with Marcos Rojo and Ibrahimovic both substituted with injuries, but Rashford’s intervention ensure their hopes of continental silverware and a place in next season’s Champions League are still alive.

There was an early scare for United when Leander Dendoncker, Anderlecht’s scorer in the first leg, unleashed a dipping 30-yard strike that almost caught out Sergio Romero, only just clearing the crossbar.

But the hosts moved in front after Pogba’s impressive throughball had found Rashford to start a counterattack. At the second attempt, the England forward was able to square for Mkhitaryan, who took one touch and fired low past Ruben from 15 yards.

Ruben then had to make two saves in quick succession to keep Anderlecht in the tie, getting up well to save Pogba’s header before diving at full stretch to keep out an excellent curling effort from Lingard.

But United suffered a blow when Rojo was forced off on a stretcher with a knee problem to add to Mourinho’s defensive injury problems – Daley Blind coming on – and the visitors almost levelled when Frank Acheampong muscled his way into the box before being denied by Romero.

Anderlecht did strike back in the 32nd minute, Youri Tielemans’ 20-yard strike deflecting onto the bar and Hanni pouncing to beat Romero on the rebound from eight yards as an entertaining tie reached the break all square.

United made a strong start to the second half when Rashford and Luke Shaw combined down the left to give Lingard the opportunity from inside the six-yard box, but the stretching winger somehow failed to get enough contact on the ball to prod home.

Mourinho used his second change on the hour mark, bringing on Marouane Fellaini for Lingard, while Anderlecht introduced Nicolae Stanciu and Massimo Bruno as both sides chased the crucial a third goal.

Rashford fired wide from a good opening for United after Ibrahimovic – back in the team as one of five United changes – headed into his path.

And Rashford was guilty of another squandered opportunity when he pounced on a mistake from defender Dennis Appiah and raced clear on goal, only to overrun the ball as he attempted to round Ruben.

United were upping the pressure and it took a supreme close-range save from Ruben deny Ibrahimovic when the striker seemed destined to score, before the former Sweden captain had a penalty claim turned down after going down under pressure from Uros Spajic.

Pogba was the next player to miss from a golden chance, volleying over with an awful attempt after Mkhitaryan’s corner fell into his path six yards out, while Ibrahimovic lashed a shot wide after great work from Michael Carrick.

United’s injury woes took another turn for the worse at the end of regulation time, Ibrahimovic limping down the tunnel after landing awkwardly from an aerial challenge with Kara, Anthony Martial replacing him for extra time.

Pogba had a goal ruled out in the first half of extra time, Fellaini penalised for a foul on Spajic as he headed into the Belgium international’s path.

But the breakthrough finally arrived for United after 107 minutes, Rashford collecting another Fellaini knockdown before impressively working space for himself and placing a left-footed strike beyond Ruben as Old Trafford erupted.

United had to survive two last-gasp scares as Acheampong and Kara threatened with headers, the hosts holding on to ensure Martial’s disallowed goal at the other end – correctly ruled out for offside – did not prove costly.

Nigerian chess champion Tunde Onakoya is trying to break the world record for the longest chess marathon! The record he is set to break is 58 hours.

So far, Onakoya has beaten everyone he’s played, including a really good chess player from New York named Shawn Martinez.

Onakoya’s manager, Taiwo, says the official rules allow for 5-minute breaks every hour. But Onakoya only took a total of 30 minutes of rest after playing 12 people in a row for 15 hours! That’s intense! He said he’s playing two sets of games at the same time, and he can’t lose any of them to win the record.

He wrote,

“The opponent on the first set is Shawn Martinez, a US National Chess Master, and he will play with Tunde throughout the attempt.

“Opponents in the second set are random players. He can’t lose any game on either set.

“Only Tunde’s match against Shawn Martinez is considered valid for the record. He is not competing in his simultaneous play against random opponents in the second set. NYC, come out and play regardless.”

Fabregas Speaks On Coaching Premier League Club

Fabregas Speaks On Coaching Premier League Club | Fab.ng

Cesc Fabregas, a retired football star who played mostly in the Premier League, wants to be the head coach of a top team there. Even though he has experience coaching Arsenal’s youth teams and Como’s U19 team, he doesn’t want to be an assistant coach.

Fabregas only coached Como’s U19 team for a month because he didn’t have the right licence. He’s been working on getting that licence and doing sports analysis while he waits.

Now 36 years old, Fabregas is taking a course to get his UEFA Pro licence to allow him to coach in the best European leagues, and his dream is to lead a Premier League powerhouse.

“You never know how the future will go, but I want to be a main coach. I am doing my own way at the moment.

“100 per cent my ambition one day is to coach a top club in the Premier League, the Champions League.

“But you need to respect the right steps. I feel I am ready to be a first-team coach already so I don’t want to go into these types of little coaching on the side or being an assistant. I have very clear things in my mind that I just want to be a main coach, a first-team coach, and that’s why I will do my own way until I am ready to jump onto a big train”, he said.

Manuel Akanji Wants To Help Nigerian Kids... | Fab.ng

Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji is back on social media and using his platform to connect with his Nigerian roots. The Nigerian-Swiss player recently spoke about his passion for helping Nigerian children.

Akanji had a stellar season with Manchester City last year, helping them achieve a historic treble: the Premier League trophy for the third year in a row, the FA Cup, and most importantly, their first-ever Champions League win.

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City’s manager, valued Akanji’s skills as a central defender who can also play the ball well. Akanji wasn’t afraid to take risks by pushing forward and joining the midfield when needed.

Akanji’s off-field style is as progressive as his approach to the game, as evidenced by his recent collaboration with Hypebeast, a fashion trendsetter.

Since joining Manchester City, he’s been a rock star on the pitch, consistently delivering top performances.

Hypebeast recently interviewed Akanji at Manchester City’s training ground, where they discussed his life in Manchester, the influence of manager Pep Guardiola on the team’s fashion sense (they’re apparently known for being very stylish), the new Netflix documentary, “Together: Treble Winners,” and more.

One topic particularly close to Akanji’s heart is his Nigerian heritage. He spoke about his desire to help underprivileged children in Nigeria who weren’t as fortunate as him growing up in Switzerland.

He said,

“In Nigeria, I like to help kids who didn’t have the same luck that I had with growing up in Switzerland.”

Manuel Akanji on Burna Boy and Afrobeats

The conversation also touched on music. When asked about Afrobeats, Akanji said…

“My favourite artist is Burna Boy.

I spoke with him after the Champions League final. I love listening to Afrobeats.”

While Manuel Akanji has a strong connection to his Nigerian heritage, as evidenced by his desire to help children there, he ultimately chose to represent Switzerland on the international football stage.

This is likely due to growing up in Switzerland and potentially coming up through their youth development system.
