Linda Ikeji is stepping back into filmmaking! The Nigerian entrepreneur and media personality recently announced her upcoming project, “The Night of June 7th,” on her Instagram page. This marks Ikeji’s second foray into directing feature films, following the success of her 2023 release, “Dark October.”
Both films draw inspiration from real-life events, showcasing Ikeji’s interest in using cinema to explore true stories. The announcement on April 22nd, 2024, hints at Ikeji’s pride in this new project, suggesting she might be delving into another powerful and impactful narrative.
With “Dark October” tackling the sensitive subject of the Aluu 4 lynching, it will be interesting to see what social issue or historical event “The Night of June 7th” brings to light.
“My second feature film, The Night of June 7th (inspired by true events), is coming to you in 2024. If you loved (or didn’t love Dark October…lol), you will love this! This movie was written and produced by me, and I can’t wait for you guys to see it. It will take you through all kinds of emotions. The Night of June 7th is coming, y’all,” she wrote.
Linda Ikeji’s new film, “The Night of June 7th,” is shrouded in a bit of mystery.
The exact true event it is based on remains unconfirmed. There’s a strong possibility that it draws inspiration from a tragic incident in Nigerian history.
On June 7th, 2005, a horrific event known as the Apo 6 killings unfolded. Nigerian police officers brutally killed five young Igbo men and a woman at a police checkpoint in Gimbiya Street, Area 11, Gariki, Abuja. This happened under the command of former deputy commissioner of police Danjuma Ibrahim.
Reportedly, this happened because the female victim rejected romantic advances from the police officer at a nightclub in the city.
Clearly, this isn’t the first time Ikeji tackles a sensitive real-life story. Her 2023 film, “Dark October,” explored the heartbreaking lynching of four university students wrongly accused of robbery.
The cast of “The Night of June 7th” boasts some impressive names. They include Gideon Okeke, Charles Lenny, April Chidinma,Ali Nuhu, Dante Okere, and Femi Branch.
With Ikeji’s past success in portraying true stories on screen and this strong cast, anticipation is building for this upcoming film.
