"The Man Died": Wale Ojo Played Wole Soyinka | Fab.ng

Veteran Nollywood actor Wale Ojo is set to star as the iconic Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka in a new film adaptation of Soyinka’s famous memoir, “The Man Died.”

The book tells the story of Soyinka’s experiences as a political prisoner during the Nigerian Civil War in the late 1960s. It’s a powerful account of his thoughts and struggles while being held by the government.

“The Man Died” was published in 1972, two years after the war ended. Soyinka later became the first Sub-Saharan African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986, a historic achievement.

Interestingly, in July 2023, on Soyinka’s 89th birthday, Wale Ojo himself paid tribute to the literary giant, calling him “a rare icon.” Now, Ojo will have the chance to bring Soyinka’s story to life on the big screen.

“Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka is 89 years old today. Love him OR hate him HE has earned his place amongst the G. O. A. T. of this universe!” the 55-year-old posted on Instagram.

Joining Wale Ojo in the cast of “The Man Died” is a lineup of Nollywood stars. Familiar faces like Chidi Mokeme, Sam Dede, and Norbert Young will share the screen. Rising talents like Simileoluwa Hassan and Christiana Oshunniyi will join too. The film also introduces newcomer Abraham Amkpa.

Femi Odugbemi is the producer, Bode Asiyanbi is the writer, and Awam Amkpa directs. The film is set to hit theatres in July 2024, a special date chosen to celebrate Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday.

This isn’t the first time Soyinka’s work has been adapted for the screen. In 2022, his play “Death and the King’s Horseman” was transformed into the Netflix movie “Elesin Oba, The King’s Horseman.”

Soyinka, a celebrated author and the first-ever Nobel laureate from Sub-Saharan Africa has a rich literary legacy. “The Man Died” joins a collection of powerful works. It includes “The Lion and the Jewel,” “The Trials of Brother Jero,” “Aké: The Years of Childhood,” and “You Must Set Forth at Dawn.”

The new Nigerian movie “Beast of Two Worlds” (“Ajakaju”) is a massive hit! This epic Yoruba film brought in a whopping ₦63.2 million during its opening weekend, according to official data released by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) on Thursday.

This is the highest opening weekend gross for any Nollywood movie released in 2024 so far! “Beast of Two Worlds” even managed to outperform the Hollywood blockbuster “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” which premiered at the same time but only earned ₦49.3 million in its opening weekend.

“Beast of Two Worlds” is a collaboration between Anthill Studios and first-time producer, Nollywood actress Eniola Ajao. The movie tells the story of a desperate king who faces exile if he can’t produce a male heir.

In a risky move, he takes a new wife, but this decision brings chaos to his entire kingdom. The film is co-directed by Adebayo Tijani and Odunlade Adekola (who also plays the king). The star-studded cast includes Sola Sobowale, Femi Adebayo, Lateef Adedimeji, Mercy Aigbe, and many other popular Nollywood actors.

“Beast of Two Worlds” is the latest addition to a string of successful Nigerian epic films, following in the footsteps of hits like “Aníkúlápó,” “King of Thieves,” “Òrìṣà,” and “Jagun Jagun.”

Kanayo O Kanayo To Play First Major Igbo-speaking Role Since 1992

Published

Kanayo O. Kanayo In "Out Of Breath" | Fab.ng

Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo will star in “Out of Breath.” This is his first major Igbo-speaking role in a long time! This is a big deal for Kanayo because he became famous for playing Chief Omego in an Igbo-language movie titled “Living in Bondage” way back in the day. Even though he’s starred in tonnes of movies since then, “Out of Breath” will be his first chance to get back to his roots in a big production.

He wrote in a caption for an Instagram post regarding the new film trailer,

Everyone is at home in his dialect. English language remains a borrowed tongue.”

The movie “Out of Breath” is an epic story told in the Igbo language. It’s based on real-life events and promises to be a powerful African tale about bravery and holding onto traditions. Obi Emelonye, who released the trailer on his birthday, March 24th, directed the movie.

“I have planted another legacy tree by cooking something in Igbo,” he posted on Twitter.

“Out of Breath” also stars a bunch of other well-known Nollywood actors. They include Jidekene Achufusi (whom we mentioned earlier), Chidi Mokeme, Queen Nwokoye, and several others.

The movie is special because it’s an epic story told in an indigenous language, Igbo, which isn’t as common in mainstream Nollywood. In recent years, there have been a few other successful epic movies in Yoruba, another Nigerian language. Some of these movies include “Aníkúlápó” and “King of Thieves.” Another Yoruba epic called “Beast of Two Worlds” is actually coming out in theatres on March 29th.

There’s no word yet on exactly when “Out of Breath” will be released in theatres.
